Trigeminal Nerve Block

During a trigeminal nerve block, a few milliliters of local anesthetic are injected into the soft tissue just in front of the ear where the trigeminal nerve resides. A very fine needle is used for the injection. There will some temporary numbness and possibly soreness or bruising after the injection.

Occipital Nerve Block

During an occipital nerve block, a few milliliters of local anesthetic, sometimes combined with steroids, are injected under the scalp where the occipital nerve resides. The injection is done at the back of the head just above the neck. A very fine needle is used for the injection. There will some temporary numbness and soreness after the injection.

Skin Biopsy

Skin biopsies are typically taken from the ankle region, leg and thigh although the location can be varied based on the patient’s symptoms and condition. The area is numbed with a local anesthetic and a small piece of skin is removed with a sharp pen-shaped device. This procedure is used to identify small fiber neuropathy and sometimes to assist in diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.
